The Artist
Matt Gould

Kia ora, my name is Matt Gould and I'm an artist based in New Zealand. The subject of my work is inspired by my Christian faith. I use layers of small, individually drawn circles to create large scale works.
The hope is that as you initially see the work, it may just look like a cool image but as you look longer, you notice that something strange is going on and the circles become clearer. So, why circles? To me, the circles represent moments. Each piece is made up of moments, interactions, the good, the bad, the in-between.
Just like our life, there are moments or circles that turn out perfect, and there are ones that miss the mark. Ultimately, each and every circle creates the final image just like each and every moment we experience is what culminates into this thing we call life.
No individual circle completes the final image; it takes each one working together to create the finished product. Interestingly, if you took one circle away, it would become blaringly obvious that something is missing.Life can be like that too. There are moments we would rather forget, things we wish we hadn't done, or people we wish we had never met. In the end, our life is made up of moments, and if we were to take one away, we may not be the person we are today.Thank you for joining me on this journey through life. The circle you add to it is incredibly important to the final image of creation - even if it doesn't always feel like it, this place wouldn't be the same without you.God bless,Matt.

Lion
"Lion" was born out of an idea I had while working on another piece, "Finished" [the cross]. As I reflected on the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross and the way he's described as both the lion and the lamb, I knew this was going to be my next project.

As I worked on this, a thought continuously came to mind, "how exactly do a create the texture of fur when all I'm using is circles?"
I pushed ahead anyway, and while it wasn't easy, I feel I've created something that is uniquely my style while honouring the overall idea I was originally trying to create.
